Orientation

The BPCPS Mission: (1) Prepare for success in college, (2) Become a more ethical person.

Brief introduction to the maxims for the Five Key Virtues:
  • Respect - Keep the peace
  • Courage - Get involved
  • Compassion - Give people what they need (not just what they want)
  • Integrity - Take responsibility
  • Perseverance - Show some grit

Respect Unit

  • "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." (Mohandas K. Gandhi): Revenge eventually leads to everyone getting hurt. It does not solve the conflict.
  • Maxim for respect: keep the peace: Do everything you can to solve conflicts peacefully.
  • Escalating a conflict: Making a conflict worse by retaliating (revenge)
  • De-escalating a conflict: Making a conflict better by refusing to retaliate.
  • Bystander: someone who sees a conflict, a case of bullying, or some violent act.
  • The bystander holds the power: bystanders have the most power to escalate or de-escalate a situation depending on how they respond. Laughing, encouraging can escalate the conflict. Refusing to laugh or encourage can de-escalate.
