Respect Unit
  • Maxim "Respect Your Community": Recognize that you owe certain duties as a member of a community and follow through with these duties.
  • Duty: An action that is expected or required of you; an action that you must follow through with as a member of a community.
  • Social Contract: An unwritten and unspoken contract that you agree to whenever you are a member of a community. The contract specifies what you are to give and take. You give certain duties whether you like them or not. You take certain benefits that you have a right to as a member of a community. Whether you notice it or not, every community works this way.
  • Socrates in Crito: In the dialogue Crito, by plato, Socrates is faced with the choice to escape from prison, avoid execution, and live in exile or to follow the laws of Athens--the same laws by which he was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death--and remain in prison to await execution. Out of respect for the social contract, Socrates elects to follow the laws, stay in prison, and accept the death penalty.
  • Personal Inclination: What you want to do; what you feel like doing.
  • Code Switching: Going back and forth between different ways of speaking, dressing, acting, etc. in order to identify with different communities.
  • Identifying with a Community: Showing that you are a member of that community.
